This map provides statistics for some of the top points of interest of the transportation system in Canada for data publicly available by specific geography.

More information on Total enplaned/deplaned passengers

Definition: The number of revenue-passengers getting onto or leaving a plane at a given Canadian airport. ECATS provides the information by arrivals and departures as well as by the destination market: domestic, transborder (United States) and other international airports. This number may include estimates for missing values and be revised as the missing data are provided.

Importance: This number shows activity in term of people moving in and out of aircraft at a given Canadian airport.

Definition: The number of itinerant movements (flights) at a given Canadian airport. Statistics Canada provides the information by arrivals and departures as well as by destination market: domestic, transborder (United States) and other international airports.

Importance: This number shows activity in term of aircraft movements at a given Canadian airport.

Definition: The number of travellers entering Canada from the United States (US) including US citizens entering Canada and Canadian travellers returning home at the given crossing location. The number of travellers is also available by automobile (car), plane, boat, bus by train and other ways of travelling such as motorcycle or bicycle.

Importance: This number shows the level of tourism and business travel activity between the US and Canada where the number of people travelling between the two countries is bigger than the number of people travelling between Canada and the rest of the world.

Definition: The number of travellers entering Canada at the given crossing location, except those from the United States. The number includes non-Canadian citizens entering Canada and Canadian travellers returning home. Overseas travellers usually arrive by airplane.

Importance: This number shows an overview of travel between Canada and international locations. It does not include the number of travellers from the United States.

Definition: The number of vehicles entering Canada from the United States at the given border location. The number of vehicles is also available by automobiles (cars), by trucks (commercial vehicles) and other vehicles such as bicycles.

Importance: This number shows trends of more or less automobiles, trucks and commercial traffic crossing the border. Truck and commercial traffic by road makes up roughly 60% of the value of overall trade between Canada and the United States.

Definition: The value of exports in thousands of Canadian dollars for the month. Transport Canada did not adjust the value of the dollar for seasonal changes in movements.  The value is tied to the land border based on the port of exit; where the goods left the country and the mode of transport captured in the trade data.

Importance: This number shows the value of the total amount of Canadian exports using the port of exit, mostly to the United States; our largest trading partner.

Definition: Value of imports in thousands of Canadian dollars for the month. Transport Canada has not adjusted the value of the dollar for seasonal changes in movements. For imports, some traffic may be missed at the border since the traffic listed is based on the port of clearance in Canada. There are cases where the port of clearance  is an inland location.

Importance: This number shows the value of imports to Canada cleared at the port of clearance, mostly from the United States; our largest trading partner.

Definition: Value is recorded in thousands of Canadian dollars for the month. Transport Canada did not adjust the value of the dollar for seasonal changes in movements. For exports, the value is tied to the marine port of exit that describes where the goods left the country and the mode of transport captured in the trade data. For imports, the value is tied to the port of clearance, which can be an inland location and not the port where the goods entered the country. So the value shown for imports excludes the value of goods that pass through the port on entering Canada but are cleared at another inland location. This makes the values shown here lower than the actual values for the imported goods using the port.

Ports record volume in metric tonnes. Twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) is a common way they measure the containers coming through a port. This is more accurate than a container count, because containers can be different sizes and the TEU measurement accounts for container size. TEUs includes loaded and empty containers (those carrying goods and those that are empty returning to the shipper).

Importance: These numbers show the value and activity on a monthly basis at the ports, which are key hubs in international trade.

Definition: Transport Canada has not adjusted the value in thousands of Canadian dollars for seasonal changes in movements. It has broken down the value by commodity and country (for exports the country is the country of destination of the goods and for imports the country is the country of origin of the goods). The value of exports includes locally produced goods and foreign produced goods. There are two groups of foreign produced, and both are included in the exports. The first is goods that are not modified after being imported, and the second is goods that are modified after being imported.

Importance: These numbers show the top countries for various regions in the world, who trade with Canada and the top commodities being traded between Canada and those regions (using the North American Product Classification System). This reveals key markets and key commodities to major regions in the world.
